Transforming Triggers: Lessons from an Old House and Personal Growth

Introduction: The Old House and Its Story

There’s an old house near where I live, built in the 1800s. It's charming yet slightly wonky, a quaint juxtaposition to the creeping modernity that often threatens its existence. Once surrounded by vacant farmland, then a small town, it now stands at the corner of a busy intersection in a suburban area. People like me, seeking refuge from our always-on world, have come to appreciate its presence.

The Metamorphosis of the Old House

Daily, as I pass by this home, I wonder about the lives of those who once inhabited it. What would they think of the changes encircling their once-isolated abode? One notable change is the unsightly power lines encroaching upon the property, entangling themselves in the mature trees. These trees, subjected to the most dreadful trimmings, remind me of the hasty haircuts an annoyed mother might give before school picture day. They stand awkward and disfigured.

Recently, the property sold and has been vacant for weeks. Landscape crews have swept in, removing the misshapen trees and quaint fence, exposing the house on its busy street corner. As I've observed these changes, I've noticed a metamorphosis. The trees, once majestic despite their choppy tops, transformed from ugly, 10-foot stumps to small remnants and finally were removed entirely, leaving nothing but indentations in the ground.

A Parallel with Personal Growth

Coincidentally, I usually listen to a podcast whenever I drive past this house. Today was an episode of 'The Adult Chair' by Michelle Chalfant. I'm new to her work but deeply intrigued. One episode, 'Steps for Working Through a Trigger with Angela Johnson,' particularly caught my attention.

Understanding and Embracing Triggers

I'm no stranger to triggers. I was familiar with its meaning before the term became part of our everyday lexicon. As the episode unfolded, I found myself deeply engaged, discussing triggers not just as emotions but as limiting beliefs we hold about ourselves.

We all have pain, trauma, and triggers. How we cope with them significantly shapes who we are and how we interact with the world. Whether we shy away from intense emotions or overwhelm others with our pain, our triggers play a crucial role in our life experiences.

The Journey of Healing

Living in an era where discussing mental health openly is encouraged feels like a blessing, though we still have a long way to go in destigmatizing and accurately labeling mental health issues. Social media, in my view, is a double-edged sword in this regard.

Triggers are like lightning strikes; they only hurt if there’s something vulnerable to hit. To heal, you must uncover these sensitive areas that your unconscious mind clings to. The real freedom comes from dismantling these limiting beliefs. Triggers point to where and how these beliefs formed, guiding the work needed to heal.

The Process of Clearing Triggers

The tree stumps near the old house reminded me of triggers. Like land mines, we tiptoe around them, constantly on guard. Watching the trees transform from towering figures to trimmed stumps and finally to nothing but soft spots in the ground, I saw a parallel with clearing triggers. They no longer cast shadows or present obstacles. The house now stands in its full charm, unencumbered.

Connecting Through Storytelling

As I finalize my debut novel, I find it hard to release the story and characters that have been a part of me for so long. As an author, I hope to forge a meaningful connection with my readers. In our technology-driven world, where personal connections often feel scarce, I write with the intention of resonating with you, perhaps even inspiring positive change.

In my manuscript, the protagonist, Harper Brasfield, is bold, brave, and a fighter, yet flawed and unaware of her triggers. This leads to struggles in relationships and an unthinkable situation that demands her growth and change. Harper’s journey through her triggers mirrors the transformative process I've described. While her story isn’t over, I hope my novel captivates you and resonates deeply.

Your Thoughts and Experiences

As we journey through the landscapes of our own lives, each of us has unique stories and insights. I would love to hear from you in the comments below. How have you experienced personal transformation in your life? Have you encountered 'triggers' that led to growth and change? Perhaps you have your own 'old house' story that mirrors your journey. Share your experiences, and let's discuss how these moments shape our paths. Your stories inspire and enlighten not just me but all who join in this conversation. Let's connect and grow together.

Final Thoughts and Resources

For more on working through triggers, I recommend listening to Michelle Chalfant’s podcast. It's enlightening and could be the first step in understanding and transforming your own triggers.
